NYI ISLANDERS #5 Denis Potvin
Denis Potvin was one of the greatest defensemen in New York Islanders history. He played 15 seasons with the team and helped lead them to four straight Stanley Cup wins from 1980 to 1983.
Potvin was known for his strong defence, big hits, and ability to score. He won the Norris Trophy three times as the best defenseman in the NHL. On the ice, he was a smart and fearless leader who played a key role in the Islanders’ success.
As captain, Potvin inspired his teammates and gave fans someone to cheer for. His leadership helped shape the team’s winning culture during its greatest years.
In 1992, the Islanders retired his number 5 jersey to honour everything he gave to the team. Denis Potvin will always be remembered as a legend of the Islanders and one of the best defensemen to ever play the game.
