John Tonelli was a tough and dependable forward who helped the New York Islanders win four Stanley Cups in a row from 1980 to 1983. He was known for working hard, playing strong, and stepping up in big moments.
One of Tonelli’s biggest plays came in 1982 when he scored the overtime goal that won the Islanders their third straight championship. He was good at both offence and defence and was always willing to do whatever it took to help the team.
Fans loved Tonelli for his effort and heart. He was a team player and a leader who set a great example on and off the ice.
In 2022, the Islanders retired his number 27 jersey to thank him for everything he did for the team. John Tonelli will always be remembered as a key part of the Islanders’ winning years and a true team hero.
