Born on November 18, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Ortiz began his MLB career with the Minnesota Twins in 1997 before joining the Red Sox in 2003. It was with the Red Sox that Ortiz became a star.

Ortiz was known for his home runs and game-winning hits, especially during the 2004 postseason, when he helped the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years.
