Jacques Plante was one of the greatest goaltenders in hockey history and a legend for the Montreal Canadiens. He helped the team win six Stanley Cups and won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie seven times.
Plante was a smart and fearless player. He changed the game forever by becoming the first goalie to regularly wear a mask during games, a move that would soon become the norm for every goalie in hockey.
He played with great skill, quick reflexes, and strong leadership. His calm play in net helped the Canadiens dominate during the 1950s and early 1960s.
In 1995, the Canadiens retired Plante’s number 1 jersey to honour his amazing career and impact on the game. Jacques Plante will always be remembered as a true hockey pioneer and one of the greatest goaltenders ever.
