PHI EAGLES #44 Rudolph Retzlaff
Pete Retzlaff was one of the best tight ends in Philadelphia Eagles history. Known for his speed, strong hands, and smart play, Retzlaff became a key part of the Eagles’ offence and a fan favourite in Philadelphia.
The Eagles picked Retzlaff in the 22nd round of the 1953 NFL Draft. He started as a wide receiver but later switched to tight end, where he became one of the best in the league. He was tough to defend and always came through with big plays when the team needed him.
His greatest season came in 1965 when he was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player. That year, he led the league in catches and yards—a rare achievement for a tight end.
Off the field, Retzlaff was known for being humble, kind, and a great teammate. He led by example and showed what it meant to play the game the right way.
To honour everything he did for the team, the Eagles retired his number 44 jersey. Pete Retzlaff will always be remembered as a true Eagles legend.
