CLE GAURDIANS #14 Larry Doby
Larry Doby made history when he became the first African American player in the American League. He joined the Cleveland Guardians (then called the Indians) in 1947, just months after Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier in the National League.
Doby faced a lot of unfair treatment because of his race, but he didn’t give up. He stayed strong, played hard, and opened doors for future Black players in baseball.
On the field, Doby was a star. He was chosen as an All-Star seven times and helped lead the team to a World Series title in 1948. In 1998, he was added to the Baseball Hall of Fame for his great career and important role in changing the game.
Off the field, Doby was known for his kindness, honesty, and hard work for equal rights. He helped young players, stood up for civil rights, and gave back to his community. His story is not just about baseball—it’s about courage, strength, and making a real difference.
