TOR MAPLE LEAFS #1 Johnny Bower - SQ
Johnny Bower was one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. He played most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and became a fan favourite for his fearless style and hard work.
Bower was born in Saskatchewan in 1924. He served in the army during World War II and didn’t make it to the NHL until he was in his 30s, which is very late for a hockey player. But once he got there, he made every game count.
He helped the Maple Leafs win four Stanley Cups in the 1960s. He was known for diving head-first to stop pucks, even before goalies wore masks. He showed incredible bravery and dedication to his team.
Even after he retired, Bower stayed close to the team and the fans. He was always friendly, humble, and grateful for everything hockey gave him.
Johnny Bower’s number 1 was retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he is remembered as a true Canadian hero, both on and off the ice.
