NYM METS #17 Keith Hernandez - SQ

Keith Hernandez played a major role in changing the New York Mets into a championship team. Known for his great defence, smart baseball mind, and leadership, he became one of the most respected and loved players in Mets history.

He joined the Mets in 1983 in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals and quickly became a team leader. At first base, Hernandez was outstanding—his quick reflexes, smooth glove work, and strong instincts helped him win several Gold Glove Awards and made the Mets’ defence one of the best in baseball.

He also helped on offence, getting on base often and hitting well in key situations. He didn’t try to hit home runs every time—he played smart, helping move runners and drive in important runs.

But what really made Hernandez special was his leadership. He pushed his teammates to do better, helped younger players grow, and showed everyone what it meant to play hard and play the right way.

In 1986, he helped lead the Mets to a World Series championship. His defence and clutch hitting were key in the playoffs. His catch to seal the Game 7 win is one of the most remembered plays in Mets history.
