Jean Ratelle was one of the smoothest and most respected players in New York Rangers history. Known for his smart play, great passing, and quiet leadership, Ratelle led by example and earned the admiration of teammates and fans alike.
During his time with the Rangers, Ratelle was the heart of the famous “GAG Line” with Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield. He was a top scorer and a key reason the Rangers were one of the best teams in the NHL in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Ratelle was also known for his sportsmanship. He won the Lady Byng Trophy twice for playing at a high level with few penalties, showing you could be competitive and respectful at the same time.
In 2018, the Rangers retired his number 19 jersey to honour everything he brought to the team. Jean Ratelle will always be remembered as a true Rangers legend, both for his skill and his class.
