MTL EXPOS #10 Rusty Staub
Rusty Staub, known lovingly as "Le Grand Orange" for his red hair and big personality, became one of the first stars in Montreal Expos history. As a powerful hitter and fan favourite, he helped bring baseball to life in a new city.
Staub joined the Expos in 1969, their first season, and quickly became the face of the team. With his strong bat, sharp eye at the plate, and solid defence, he gave the young franchise instant credibility. Fans in Montreal loved his style of play and his easygoing charm.
Staub was more than just a good hitter—he was a team leader. He came through in big moments, worked hard every day, and played with heart. Off the field, he connected deeply with the Montreal community, doing charity work and becoming a symbol of kindness and generosity.
Though his time with the Expos ended after a few seasons, Staub’s legacy in Montreal remained strong. In 2012, he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, honouring his lasting impact on the team and the city.
Rusty Staub will always be remembered as a founding hero of the Expos—someone who gave the fans something to cheer for and helped make baseball in Montreal truly special.
