Wayne Gretzky, known as “The Great One,” is widely seen as the greatest hockey player of all time. When he joined the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, he brought new energy to the team and helped grow the sport of hockey in Southern California and across the United States.
Gretzky played for the Kings until 1996. During that time, he used his amazing skill, hockey smarts, and teamwork to lead the Kings to their first-ever Stanley Cup Final in 1993. Fans were excited to watch him play, and young players looked up to him.
Gretzky was known for his incredible passing, ability to read the game, and his calm, smart play on the ice. He broke many NHL records and changed how the game was played.
In 2002, the Kings retired his number 99 jersey to honour everything he brought to the team and to hockey as a whole. Wayne Gretzky will always be remembered as a Kings legend and a player who helped make hockey popular in places it had never been before.
