NYG GIANTS #7 Mel Hein
Mel Hein was one of the toughest and most reliable players in New York Giants history. He played center on offence and linebacker on defence—a rare achievement even today. His strength, intelligence, and leadership helped shape the Giants into a championship team during the 1930s and 1940s.
Hein joined the Giants in 1931 and made an impact right away. He helped lead the team to several NFL Championship games and earned many honours for his play. In 1934, Hein was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, a rare honour for a lineman. That same year, he helped the Giants win the NFL title.
Hein was respected for his calm leadership and steady play. He never missed a game in 15 seasons, earning him the nickname “Old Indestructible.” He was known for staying focused under pressure and doing whatever the team needed to win.
Off the field, Hein gave back to the community and was a role model for younger athletes. He showed the same dedication and class in life as he did on the football field.
The Giants retired Mel Hein’s number 7 jersey to honour his amazing career. He will always be remembered as one of the smartest, toughest, and most respected players in team history.
