CLE BROWNS #45 Ernie Davis - SQ
Ernie Davis, wearing number 45, was a trailblazing running back for the Cleveland Browns in the early 1960s. Nicknamed "The Elmira Express," Davis made history as the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. Though his career was short, his impact on football was unforgettable.
Davis had a rare mix of speed, strength, and quick moves that made him a dangerous player on the field. He could break tackles, outrun defenders, and score from anywhere. His talent brought excitement and hope to the Browns and their fans.
In college, Davis was a two-time All-American and won the Heisman Trophy in 1961. He was known for his leadership and strong character, inspiring his teammates and many young athletes.
Sadly, Davis was diagnosed with leukemia in 1962 and passed away at just 23 years old. Even though he never got to play in a regular-season NFL game, his courage and achievements continue to inspire. Ernie Davis will always be remembered as a hero who broke barriers and left a lasting legacy in the game of football.
